ADV: I love carbs :)

When I received the invitation to visit High 5 bread factory in Shah Alam, I was so excited that I made sure my “I Love Carbs” t-shirt was available to be worn on the trip, hehe. I’ve never been to a bread factory before and I’ve always had this fantasy that my loaf of bread comes from one of hundreds of jovial old ladies bending over a long kitchen counter kneading dough in a HUGE cottage.

What greeted me was even better! We were treated to a tour in High 5 Bread Town Museum, the first of its kind in the world. The museum reveals the works and art behind bread-making industry that go back as far as 5000 years!

# – At the entrance to High 5 Bread Town Museum.

The museum was very detailed in re-creating all the ancient scenarios, it’s quite surreal being there.

# – Roman section.

# – Check out how the Egyptians made bread.

They even had a Pharaoh in the house!

# – Great Pharaoh overlooking the field of wheat.

An array of mock breads from different civilizations, countries and eras were displayed too.

# – Camhoring with a pretzel.

My favourite part of the museum has got to be the toasters display. All kinds of toasters from different era were showcased. It’s very interesting to see the evolution of one of the most common electrical appliances in our homes.

# – Toaster gallery.

We also got to travel forward in time.

# – Space age croissants and pizzas, yummy!

# – Eat bread so you can grow up to be an astronaut.

There’s this awesome glass tunnel/bridge that connects once section of the museum to another, passing through the actual bread factory! It’s really cool to be able to see the day to day operations in a bread factory.

# – Roti!

# – I was really impressed by the gigantic revolving trays and trays of freshly baked bread!

As we got to the other side of the museum, there’s this bowl of real dough to play with! Of course we didn’t miss the opportunity of posing with it :D

# – Me and Michelle stretching it out.

# – BAD KY!

Next, it’s the most awaited part of our visit. We got to meet celebrity Chef Ismail and he’s there to teach us his awesome recipes using High 5 bread! I love, love, love him!

He’s so upbeat and happy and he made us do aerobics carrying two loaves of bread, haha.

# – Chef Ismail doing his thang.

# – Me, KY and Huai Bin baking in full garb, hehe.

# – Check out our masterpieces :D

# – Don’t mess!

# – Most awesome mini pizzas ever, each made by me, KY and Huai Bin :)

It’s very easy to make the mini pizzas. It’s great as snacks especially if you’ve got extra bread. First make some pizza sauce by stir frying some diced onions, garlic, thyme and oregano till fragrant. Then add tomato paste, plum tomatoes, black pepper, salt & sugar to taste. Add in parsley and simmer till sauce thickens. Next toast the bread till it’s dry, spread the sauce you made earlier on them and heap on the toppings (sausages, onions, capsicums, use your imagination!). Then top everything off with mozarella cheese or even cheddar cheese. Pop the mini pizzas into the oven, grill a couple of minutes till the cheese is melted and voila, delicious mini pizza!

# – High 5 Bread Tuna Canapes

The canapes are even easier to make! Just use cookie cutters of desired shape and cup some shapes out from the bread. Spread butter and place tuna mayonnaise on it. Then garnish with sliced cherry tomatoes and chopped parsley/spring onions. Perfect for parties!

# – Sardine curry puffs.

This is possibly my favourite of all. For this dish, you can use existing sardine dishes or make from fresh, it’s up to you. Heat up oil and fry chopped onions till fragrant. Then stir in the sardines and fry to the aroma hits your nostril. Add mayonnaise, calamansi/lime juice, salt and sugar to taste and fry till well-combined. Set aside to cool.

Now comes the fun part, get a slice of bread and remove the crusts. Use a rolling pin and roll the bread till it’s very thin. Then, place the sardine fillings onto the flatten bread and fold diagonally. Join the edges of the bread with flour paste (just a basic flour + water mixture). Use a fork and gently press around the edges to seal the sides. Heat up and and fry till golden brown. A healthier option would be baking it till brown :)

# – Nothing is better than freshly baked bread dipped in thick local black coffee.
