Niji Sushi at Bandar Manjalara.

One of my all-time favourite restaurants is Niji Sushi in Bandar Manjalara. I’ve been a regular patron for the past 4 years and we eat there almost every week. I’ve been to a few Japanese restaurants, some were pretty good but most are too expensive for the quality of food they’re serving. I quite like Sushi Zanmai and Rakuzen but I personally don’t think they match up to Niji Sushi. Niji’s food are priced reasonably and the quality is always top notch.

If you’re at Niji, you must absolutely order the salmon sashimi. I don’t know how this quaint restaurant in a quiet neighbourhood does it, but they’ve always managed to serve fresh, fatty succulent salmon sashimi. You don’t get pathetic thin slices of salmon flesh that have been dehydrated from refrigeration or big fat mushy ones that morph into manky water as soon as you pop them in your mouth.

#1 – Sakae Sashimi

Salivating already just looking at the picture.

The handrolls are freshly made. No soggy seaweed wrap for you here. And the fillings are stuffed all the way to the bottom of the handroll. My personal favourite is salmon skin temaki.

#2 – Salmon skin temakis

Stuffed in crisp seaweed wrap.

Absolutely adore their prawn/ebi tempura. Fresh prawns deep fried in light crispy batter. Not too oily and I love the dipping sauce.

#3 – Ebi tempura

Addictive.

I love their potato salad too. It’s basically cold mashed potato topped with fish roe and julienne cucumbers. But I shouldn’t order this cause it fills me up very quickly. That said, I almost always couldn’t resist.

#4 – Potato salad.

Hi-carb but worth it.

And I’m saying this again, I love their sushis too. They’re all freshly made, no soggy seaweed wrap here.

#5 – Soft shell crab maki.

Not my number one as I don’t dig sesame seeds but still very delectable.

#6 – Jellyfish/Chuka Kurage sushi and inari tuna salad.

Yummy. Yummy.

Bottomline is, this restaurant is highly recommended. I was there when it’s only one small shop and now it’s expanded into two. Thankfully, their food quality is still fantastic. If you’re there do try the cha soba too, I love it so much.

#7 – A very happy Kim.

  1. Hmmmm, your the 1st i know to say niji sushi is…like omg…nice!Haha,no denial that the price there is quite reasonable, cheap actually but sometimes when the place is pack and full with ppl,the quality of their food just degrade.Never try the tamago,it taste damn weird :P otherwise its recommended for cheap and reasonable japanese food ;) cheers.

  2. chingy: yay! no offence though, jap is a derogatory term…should always use “japanese”. sorry for being a PC nazi.

heartbreaker: yeah im sure there are some stuff that are not so great. i’m being very biased here obviously because i think they serve the best sashimi and too me is a mark of a great japanese restaurant.

whimsicaljottings: in that case you have to make your own nippon fare!!!
